SAP Cloud ALM vs. Solution Manager: Alternatives for SAP IT Service Management
Mainstream maintenance for SAP Solution Manager 7.2 (SolMan) ends in late 2027. SAP Cloud ALM is the official successor, but it does not cover key functions such as service, approval and documentation processes. This article provides a brief overview of the alternatives and shows in detail how combining SAP Cloud ALM with ServiceNow® closes these gaps.
Why SAP Cloud ALM alone is often not enough
As described in our article on the SAP Solution Manager end of life, mainstream maintenance for Solution Manager 7.2 ends on December 31, 2027, with limited extended maintenance available until the end of 2030. SAP recommends moving to SAP Cloud ALM, which customers with Enterprise Support can use at no additional license cost.
However, SAP Cloud ALM is not Solution Manager in the cloud. For example, SAP Cloud ALM offers no solution for SAP IT Service Management: incident management and key user support are missing, as is an approval process like the one provided by Solution Manager’s Change Request Management (ChaRM).
Regulated industries also miss end-to-end traceability and document management. There are essentially three ways to close these gaps:
SAP IT Service Management: SAP Cloud ALM and ServiceNow with a clear division of tasks
Each platform does what it was built for: SAP Cloud ALM handles SAP-specific functions such as testing, deployment, release management and monitoring, while ServiceNow covers service, workflow and governance processes. A key advantage is that the ServiceNow components are available for both SAP and non-SAP systems on a single platform. Standardized interfaces synchronize requirements, statuses and decisions. If you already use ServiceNow for IT service management, you can also use the CMDB, service catalog and knowledge base for SAP, making stored information available in both areas.
Three typical challenges and how to solve them
In projects to replace Solution Manager, we encounter the same questions again and again. For each of them, ServiceNow offers an answer in the form of certified standard products from our partner b-rightsource, available in the ServiceNow Store and the SAP Store.
- Managing requirements with full traceability
Challenge: Regulated industries such as life sciences and pharma in particular require comprehensive approvals and complete traceability – requirements that Cloud ALM does not yet fully cover.
Solution: With Pro Requirement for KeyUser Pro, requirements are captured and approved in ServiceNow and then synchronized with SAP Cloud ALM. Approvals remain consistently documented and verifiable. Record-Based Validation is supported, which speeds up internal validation processes.
- Organizing SAP support efficiently
Challenge: Many companies rely on key users from the business departments for 1st-level support. This model needs a new home – ideally without granting every key user full ITSM fulfiller rights.
Solution: KeyUser Pro for SAP maps the key user model in ServiceNow with preconfigured roles and processes. Business experts provide functional support, while IT focuses on complex cases.
- Migration without loss of knowledge
Challenge: Documentation that has grown in Solution Manager over the years must not be lost during the transition.
Solution: Pro Transition transfers documents, hierarchies and metadata to ServiceNow – step by step rather than as a risky big bang. With ServiceNow ITSM, this knowledge is then directly available when handling incidents and changes. iTSM Group supports you from migration through to the introduction of the right ITSM processes.
What to consider: If ServiceNow is not yet in use, license costs and implementation effort must be added; the extensions are licensed as a user-based annual subscription. In return, certified standard products keep customizing to a minimum and remain compatible with future releases. For this purpose, ServiceNow offers an OEM model in which only the platform is licensed, not ITSM. This is particularly interesting for customers who initially want to use the extensions for SAP Cloud ALM without ServiceNow ITSM. ITSM processes can be added gradually later on and then build on the knowledge base that has already been migrated.
How to successfully transition from Solution Manager to SAP Cloud ALM and ServiceNow
If you start now, there is still enough time for an orderly transition before the end of 2027. The following approach has proven effective:
- Assessment: Which Solution Manager scenarios do you use, and how critical are they?
- Target architecture: Which functions will reside in SAP Cloud ALM in the future, and which in ServiceNow?
- Step-by-step implementation: Set up SAP Cloud ALM early, introduce service and approval processes in ServiceNow, and migrate content in stages.
When choosing a partner, make sure that SAP and ServiceNow expertise come together and that standard products are used instead of custom developments. That is why iTSM Group and b-rightsource are working together on this topic: iTSM Group contributes its experience from ServiceNow implementations, while b-rightsource provides products specialized in SAP processes and the integration with SAP Cloud ALM.
Conclusion
SAP Cloud ALM is the foundation, but it does not close all of Solution Manager’s gaps. If you currently run service, approval and documentation processes in Solution Manager, the combination of Cloud ALM and ServiceNow offers a viable successor – provided the target architecture is planned now and not improvised under time pressure at the end of 2027.
